Banh mi @ Doux Chaton
Unit 1, 89 Renshaw St, Liverpool, L1 2SP
Of the two recently opened Vietnamese restaurants on Renshaw Street Doux Chaton is the busier and buzzier but not necessarily the better, with many dishes being a little better executed at Miss Pho further down the road.
However, when it comes to banh mi (the famous Vietnamese sandwich) Doux Chaton is the place to go. You can choose from beef fillet, ham and egg omelette, tofu, pork belly or lemongrass chicken — I tend to opt for the latter.
All banh mi are served on a beautifully airy, crispy rice flour baguette and filled with the usual array of elements — fresh coriander, lightly pickled carrot, cucumber, crispy shallots and a tangle of shredded daikon radish. The meat sandwiches also come with a vital smear of pork pate. Wonderfully balanced, in many ways ideal versions of what must be the world’s best sandwich.
