Basque cheesecake @ Mon Petit Chou
367 Aigburth Rd, Aigburth, Liverpool, L17 0BP
This entry could begin and end with four words: life changing Basque cheesecake. For the sake of consistency, I will work on making it a little bit longer than that, but this is the most important thing to take away.
Mon Petit Chou is a neighbourhood patisserie with a seriously big, and very well-deserved, buzz. Of a Saturday morning a huge queue forms outside the bakery, snaking down Aigburth Road.
If you can make it down there on a Thursday or Friday you’ll definitely spend less time waiting in line. A visit earlier in the week can still take up quite a big chunk of your day, though, because you’ll have such a difficult time deciding what to buy. Everything looks incredible and everything I’ve tried has been excellent.
The croissants and pain au chocolat are maybe the best I’ve had outside France — and frankly better than a lot of the ones I’ve had inside France. Perfect lamination, beautifully crisp around the edges, soft inside and buttery in a sour, gently fermented way.
The pick here, the revelation, however is the Basque cheesecake. The light caramalised crust, the interior which is somehow both silky and aerated, the not-too-sweet custard flavour. Phenomenal.
