The Wild Loaf will not be – in all likelihood – somewhere you just happen to be passing by.

The bakery began as a pop-up, operating out of a few city centre bar-restaurants, including the Pen Factory on Hope Street and from the courtyard of Buyers Club.

Now it’s settled in a location all of its own – in a unit on a small retail estate on Sefton Street, next to busy road near to Brunswick railway station. If you find yourself here then odds are it’s because you’ve made a special effort – it’ll be one you’re rewarded for.

Alongside a selection of excellent breads (sourdough, rye, fruit loaf etc.) the bakehouse and café serves a selection of cakes, doughnuts, pastries and sandwiches – including a pesto, tomato and mozzarella focaccia so delicious it’ll shake you to your core.

Such is the quality on offer here it’s difficult to recommend just one thing, but if it’s on the counter then choose the Bostock. A thick slice of croissant loaf is spread with tart homemade mixed berry jam and topped with a layer of almond paste. The whole thing is then baked again until it’s crispy on the exterior, but still buttery soft inside.

If it was any more convenient to get here, you’d probably never get to try one.
