Dark chocolate chip cookie @ Gooey

Can a cookie ever be worth almost £4? Until I’d tried this one, I’d have said no.

Gooey began as a stall in Manchester’s Ducie Warehouse before spinning off into a brunch place in the Northern Quarter (and god knows it doesn’t have nearly enough of those). They’ve now taken possession of a window at the bottom of Bold Street where you can buy doughnuts, sweet rolls and a selection of cookies.

I confess I didn’t think there would be a big enough market in Liverpool for doughnuts that cost £20 for a half-dozen, but clearly I was wrong.

Gooey is open every day until they sell out and, as long as it’s not throwing it down, this has usually happened by the early afternoon. Some of this is undoubtedly down to their doughnuts appearing all over Instagram, but there’s no denying they turn out some excellent baked goods.

Their best bakes have their eyewatering sweetness tempered with something tart, like the sharp cream cheese icing on the cinnamon roll or sour raspberry conserve in the jam doughnut.

It’s this kind of contrast that works so well in their delicious cookies, where the sweet, pillowy biscuit crumb is complemented by bitter shards of dark chocolate. Believe the hype.
