Green chilli cheeseburger @ Fatback Burgers, Black Lodge Brewing
3 Kings Dock St, Baltic Triangle, Liverpool, L1 8JU
Having lived in London in the early ‘10s I did my time in the ‘dirty burger’ trenches — I queued for two hours at MeatLiquor, I dragged people to Lucky Chip pop-ups at pubs in increasingly far-flung corners of the city, I went to the Bleecker Burger trailer on the Southbank and ate out of the paper in the pissing rain under the Hungerford bridge telling myself I was having a good time.
I can safely say that the green chilli cheeseburger at Fat Back Burgers — a little grill run from a shipping container in the beer garden of Black Lodge Brewery — is better than anything I tried on my hunt for the ‘best burger ever’ all those years ago. And I only had to wait about 10 minutes for it.
The best example of the ubiquitous smash-patty burger I’ve tasted, crispy at the edges and meltingly soft at the centre with a lovely amount of fat. On top of that yellow cheese, crinkle cut pickles and a beautifully sour, hot green chilli relish. Truly, truly great.
