Living for a year on the Rusholme-Longsight border in the late 00s meant that not only was I within close walking distance of one of the best branches of Blockbuster Video in the country (featuring a whole section of Hong Kong Cop movies) but also of a whole host of shops selling South Asian sweets.
Unfortunately since moving back to Liverpool I haven’t been able to find anywhere nearby where I can satisfy my craving for barfi, petha or gulab jamun – until now.
Located in the same Lodge Lane shipping container park also home to Noor Kitchen – As well as a, now, ever-growing number of other popular food stands — Teeb Sweets sells a whole range of Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi sweets by the quarter, half and full kilo.
The kalakand (sweet milk cake with pistachio and cardamom) is great but best of all is the jalebi. Sweet orange-tinged curls of crunchy batter soaked in a citrus sugar syrup. Delicious. Lucky for my arteries theses sweets a bit more of a walk away from me than they used to be in Manchester.
