Jian bing @ eJoy Asian Foods
1 Myrtle Parade, Liverpool, L7 7EL
Back to eJoy supermarket on Myrtle Parade, and the row of food stalls next to its entrance, this time for jian bing.
Regularly described by food and travel vloggers as ‘CHINA’S FAVOURITE BREAKFAST’ or similar, in its purest form jian bing is a thin and stretchy yellowish crepe filled with barely scrambled egg, slivered spring onion, a crisp rectangular rice cracker and a smear of piquant hoi sin sauce.
Wrapped in greaseproof paper and served scalding hot, its satisfying, savoury, delicious — a food that is the very definition of ‘more than the sum of its parts’.
This stand (the third one along as you walk into the supermarket, its sign doesn’t have an English language translation) serves as good a version of the jian bing as I’ve ever had and also gives you the option to add braised pork, a fried chicken chop or — best of all — fatty, smoky Chinese sausage. Truly the breakfast of champions, whatever time of day you eat it.
