Lahmacun, gozleme, pide @ Zorba Cafe
178 Aigburth Rd, St Michaels, Liverpool, L17 9PE
Despite its distinctly Greek name, Zorba is actually run by a Turkish family and alongside the usual range of greasy spoon classics — fry-ups, bacon rolls, burger and chips — serves a small selection of Turkish dishes (including a version of a Turkish breakfast which not only features feta, olives and cucumber but also hash browns and white buttered toast).
Most notably, as far as I’m aware anyway, this is one of the only places in Liverpool where you can get hold of the holy trinity of Turkish flatbreads: lahmacun, gozleme and pide.
The lahmacun is good and oily but with a nice, toasted crust on the exterior of the soft, well-seasoned lamb mince. The gozleme is generously filled with a combination of white and yellow cheese as well as sweet, grassy wilted spinach. The pide comes either with just cheese and egg or with yellow cheese, egg and sucuk — cumin-spiced dry-aged beef sausage. Naturally I’d suggest the latter.
If you have a willing accomplice, I’d recommend ordering all three and sharing. And if you’re alone then I’d pick the gozleme. Or maybe the pide.
