Lasagne grilled cheese @ Bakesale, Arts Bar Baltic
**NOTE: Bakesale has now relocated to Bunch Wine Bar on Berry Street**
27 Parliament St, Baltic Triangle, Liverpool, L8 5RN
Sandwiches are one of those foods, along with fancy pastries and ice cream, that people are seemingly very happy to queue for. It may even be that they might prefer to queue for them, I don’t know.
In other cities people even book in advance for the pleasure of queuing for sandwiches — at Fat Pat’s in Manchester you need to reserve your sandwich online in the morning to pick up that lunchtime, I’ve heard at some London bakeries you might even have to reserve a sandwich on Friday for the following Monday.
Jess at Bakesale makes the most amazing sandwiches I’ve tasted and, right now at least, you don’t have to queue for them — one of the many reasons this is the greatest city in the world.
Bakesale is run as a concession within Arts Bar Baltic (a very nice laid-back bar in, unsurprisingly, the Baltic Triangle) but has operated out of a few other premises in the past, including aperitivo bar Sotto and the sadly departed Chapters of Us.
Open only on weekdays (sadly), they have a great breakfast menu and, after midday, a menu of sandwiches. These have changed a few times over the past couple of years but currently include a mortadella banh mi, a teriyaki tofu focaccia and, best of all, the lasagne grilled cheese.
The latter — heavily toasted bloomer filled with slow-cooked beef ragu, melted mozzarella and citrusy, tangy cheddar and dotted with cooked macaroni elbows for extra bite — would be my pick, but honestly they’d all be worth queuing for.
