Chop Chop is a small Korean / Japanese takeaway which used to be a much smaller Korean / Japanese takeaway.

Having previously operated out of a tiny newsstand-size cabin, the kitchen has now relocated to a full shopfront next door. They even have a few stools, tables and chairs – although if it’s dry then would tend to sit at the ones out on the pavement, as the heady smell of gochujang has a way of sticking to your clothes.

Chop Chop’s menu of bento boxes and meats over rice and noodles are a popular lunchtime treat with office workers from the nearby business district, with queues – on payday in particular – snaking down Fenwick Street.

The crunchy fried vegetable gyoza and tofu deopbap bowl with tangy fresh, radish-heavy kimchi are excellent and completely meat-free (although thanks to lashings of fish sauce, not vegan) options.

But pick of the menu is their famous ‘Mega Chicken’ – crispy skin-on chicken thigh, with plenty of brown meat as well as lightly stewed cabbage and peppers all drenched in their proprietary ‘mega’ sauce, which tastes to me like a thinned-down version of dakgangjeong (a tangy soy-based sweet-and-sour sauce used mostly as a glaze for fried chicken). Served either over plain rice or egg noodles, but you should always choose rice.

Prices go up by about £1 per main from lunchtime to evening (which starts at 3pm here, so don’t delay – chop chop!)
