There’s no better pastel de nata than the one you have sat on a praça in Lisbon or Porto, the sun streaming down, as you plan a day of walking around, looking at beautiful tiled buildings and drinking little glasses of Sagres.

The second best pastel de nata can be found at BoBo on Castle Street.

The café-bar - which advertises itself as serving ‘Euro wines and Iberian plates’ - is a narrow slip of a place, easily bypassed. But it’s worth stopping in, whether its to try the great selection of Spanish and Portuguese wines or, even better, one of their giant towers of jamon iberico and salted crisps.

If the sun is not yet past the yardarm then a coffee and a pastel from here is just as great. The pastry is crisp but flakes apart rather than cracking. The custard is perfectly smooth, set just on the edge of liquidity and dusted with cinnamon sugar. Wonderful.

A warning; BoBo only have a handful of natas every day, so make sure you’re here early to get one. Although if you don’t make it in time then you can always order the tortilla sandwich, which comes with a near-lethal amount of super-garlicky aioli, and a little glass of Sagres instead.
