Pepperoni slice @ Nightcrawler Pizza
38 Slater St, Liverpool, L1 4BX
As a small ‘slice bar’ attached to bar / club The Merchant, Nightcrawler is so much better than it has any right to be. This is as close as I’ve come to finding a genuine New York-style slice of pizza anywhere in this country.
There are a selection of four or five pizzas on the menu, although it’s pot luck as to which ones will be sat waiting behind the glass ready to be warmed up.
If you have the choice, the pick has to be the pepperoni slice, which fulfils the two most important roles pizza can play — comfort and ballast. A crispy base but enough give in the dough to allow it to be folded; not too much sauce and a generous, but not overwhelming, level of cheese; chewy and tangy slices of pepperoni; sliced fresh green chillies. Ideal for lining your stomach. Great stuff.
Generally speaking there’s only one person making the pizzas regardless of the hour of day or night, and they’re usually the same person working the till, so a bit of patience is sometimes necessary.
