The famous spring rolls @ Chiu’s Fish & Chips
145 Park Rd, Dingle, Liverpool, L8 6SE
The Chinese chippy isn’t particular to Liverpool but there’s nowhere else I know where it’s as widespread a phenomenon.
Chiu’s is one of four Chinese chippies along Park Road, if you count the continuation onto Aigburth Road it’s one of eight before you hit the bottom of Lark Lane — a stretch of road less than a mile and a half long.
I’ve never eaten anything from Chiu’s that isn’t one of their famous spring rolls, but they are worth the trip alone.
There are always piles of them in the glass-fronted warmer above the fryer. £2.40 (or thereabouts) gets you three long, thin crispy crispy cigars filled with gooey, pink, peppery minced pork and basically nothing else.
The only thing that really separates them from the Sayer’s sausage rolls so much of Liverpool grew up on is the dark soy sauce splashed on top just before they’re wrapped in paper.
