Queens has always felt like an extension of our front room. Probably because with its dark wooden furniture, bottle green walls and framed art posters, it is decorated exactly like our front room. But also because it’s somewhere very comfortable.

Relaxed, just the right temperature, always at least half-empty (I do worry about this a bit, being honest) Queens is a restaurant you are always happy to spend any amount of time.

The menu changes according to season, and could probably described as sitting somewhere between ‘Modern British and ‘Classic European’. Interesting in places but mostly it’s also — reassuringly — comfortable. Visit this evening and you could choose from a selection of excellent brasserie-style dishes including plaice with brown butter and capers, Barnsley lamb chop with anchovy butter beans or mushroom cassoulet.

Better still, go tomorrow and eat from their Express Lunch menu and have the baked potato with sour cream and caviar, the salt-baked beetroot with salsa verde or their Welsh rarebit, studded with cornichons so that the heady mustard-cheese mixture is cut through with pickle sharpness. Really, really good. And a glass of house wine is only an extra £3 on top. Probably the best meal deal in the city, all told.
